This is my second post on the subject of the administrations attempt to repeal this amendment. The following is a copy of a email I received today from the Center for Inquiry regarding the administrations efforts to repeal the Johnson Amendment and how to help the efforts to secure it. I appreciate your attention and encourage you to action. Nationofnope.
Earlier this year, you helped us protect the Johnson Amendment from repeal by the religious right. But the fight isn’t over yet.
The Johnson Amendment is the federal law that prevents nonprofit organizations, such as churches and groups like the Center for Inquiry, from endorsing candidates for political office. If the Johnson Amendment were scrapped, unaccountable dark money could flood from right-wing churches directly into our election system.
Back in June, we told you that Donald Trump’s religious right allies in Congress inserted a provision into a massive 2019 spending bill that would make it all but impossible for the IRS to enforce the Johnson Amendment on churches. With a possible government shutdown looming, religious conservatives see an opportunity to ram the bill through Congress with this harmful provision intact. We can’t let them get away with it.
If a 2019 spending bill is not passed soon, government funding will cease and the federal government will shut down. Members of Congress will feel pressured to vote for any spending bill that averts a shutdown. It’s going to take all of our voices together, telling them to stay strong and demanding that the provision attacking the Johnson Amendment is removed from the bill.
We need you to help us fight back against this cynical plot by the religious right to turn churches into super-PACs for their favored candidates. Congress needs to know that their secular constituents will never allow such a destructive violation of the separation of church and state.
To ensure that your voice is heard, we encourage you to call your representatives right now and say, “I’m joining secular Americans across the country to tell Congress to keep dark money from the religious right out of our election system. A congressional spending bill must NOT include any provisions that would weaken or undermine the Johnson Amendment, which is a critical law that upholds our separation of church and state.”
All you need to do is call (202) 224-3121 with your zip code to be connected to your elected officials. If you are unable to call, please use our action alert system to send your representatives a written message.
Thank you for supporting the separation of church and state!

For your consideration.

Put another way, what kind of mind demands to be worshiped for doing what came naturally?” Nationofnope.
