Your action is needed today to counter theocratic attempts to hijack the Pentagon funding process.
The Russell Amendment, a provision in the National Defense Authorization Act, would allow religious exemptions for any organization that has entered into a contract with the federal government. It would authorize any religiously affiliated organization (such as a university or hospital) that receives federal grants and contracts to discriminate against individuals or groups that do not align with its spiritual beliefs. It could have a hugely detrimental impact in the workplace against nonbelievers and religious minorities, as well as members of the LGBTQ community.
The Russell Amendment would endanger nondiscrimination policies currently protecting the vulnerable in the workforce. Under federal law, all U.S. citizens should be guaranteed equal protection under the law. The threat proposed by the Russell Amendment to this foundational principle demonstrates the necessity of a solid wall between state and church.
It’s easy to take a stand against this dangerous institutionalization of religious bigotry today!

Please oppose the Russell Amendment provision in the National Defense Authorization Act, which would authorize employment discrimination against nonbelievers and religious minorities, as well as LGBTQ folks. By waiving employment discrimination for religiously affiliated organizations that have entered into a contract with the U.S. government, the act sanctions federally funded employment discrimination. This is a dangerous collision of state and church that could undercut the constitutionally guaranteed protection of equal rights for all American citizens.
